Shopify accessibility audit for the EAA-driven EU market
Shopify stores selling into the EU sit directly under EAA Annex I (e-commerce category). That means consumer-facing obligation since June 2025 — and a real enforcement surface for agencies running Shopify portfolios. We audit theme, sections, third-party apps, and the Shopify checkout in one white-label report.
Shopify checkout is the highest-stakes accessibility surface in EU e-commerce
Shopify themes (Dawn, Sense, Crave, Refresh, custom Online Store 2.0 themes) ship with reasonable baseline accessibility — but stores rarely keep that baseline once custom sections, third-party apps, and merchandising modifications layer on top. The EAA cares about what shoppers actually encounter, not what the theme shipped with. We audit the live, in-production state.
Theme + custom sections
Dawn-derived themes are the most common. We test header navigation, mega-menus, image sliders, product cards, filtering UI, and any custom sections your design team built. Findings tagged by section so theme work has clear owners.
Third-party apps
Reviews apps (Judge.me, Yotpo, Loox), upsell apps (ReConvert, Honeycomb), pop-up apps (Klaviyo forms, Privy), and tracking-consent apps. We flag which apps generate inaccessible markup and recommend known-accessible alternatives where relevant.
Product detail page
Variant selectors, image galleries, zoom UI, color swatches, quantity steppers, ‘notify me’ back-in-stock forms. PDP is the most-visited authenticated-feeling page on a Shopify store and the highest-stakes pre-checkout journey.
Shopify checkout
Cart drawer, cart page, three-step checkout (information, shipping, payment), order-status page. Shopify hosts checkout on its own infrastructure with limited theme customisation — but checkout extensions, custom fields, and Shop Pay options can introduce failures we test for.
Shopify-specific deliverable
Same 399 € price as the generic audit. Same 5-business-day turnaround. Shopify-specific testing depth in the technical appendix. Pair it with monthly monitoring at 199 €/mo to catch regressions when you ship app or theme updates.
Homepage, top collection, two product types (simple and variant-rich), cart, checkout step 1, order-status page, account dashboard, and four client-flagged hot spots.
Each finding attributed to its source — ‘Dawn theme: header.liquid’, ‘Custom section: hero-banner’, ‘Judge.me reviews app’. Your dev team knows exactly where to fix.
Findings mapped to WCAG criterion and EN 301 549 clause. Audit report ready to forward to legal, procurement, or compliance teams handling EAA inquiries.
Checkout-flow findings get explicit critical-severity badges regardless of WCAG criterion severity. EAA enforcement risk is highest at checkout, so we surface checkout issues for client visibility.
Where a Shopify app is a structural blocker — accessibility-broken reviews widget, inaccessible upsell modal — we name a known-accessible alternative your team can swap in.
Your agency logo, name, and primary colour. Cover page, footer, and contact block use your branding. Clients never see AccessiProof unless you want them to.
FAQ
Do you audit Shopify Plus stores?
Yes. Plus stores typically have larger theme customisation and more checkout extensions, so we may extend the page allowance for an additional fee. Mention ‘Shopify Plus’ in the booking form so we scope correctly.
What about headless Shopify (Hydrogen, Next.js + Storefront API)?
Same approach — we test the rendered storefront, not the framework. For headless stores using Shopify checkout, we audit your storefront pages and the Shopify-hosted checkout. For headless stores using a custom checkout, that custom checkout falls under the general-audit scope.
Will Shopify accept this report as proof of EAA compliance?
Shopify itself doesn’t arbitrate EAA compliance — EU member-state authorities do. Our audit gives you and your client the documented evidence trail those authorities expect. For formal regulatory determinations, pair with qualified legal counsel in the relevant member state.
How does this work with monthly monitoring?
After the initial audit, monitoring rescans the same 15 pages monthly. When you ship a theme update, install a new app, or change checkout extensions, the next monthly report shows what improved or regressed. Common pattern in agencies running 5+ Shopify clients.
